The 2006 tour was a brilliant success, with approximately 600 attendees. The Silvertop reception was glorious. The brochure, designed by David Etzen of Redbar, also served as the entry pass to the homes on the tour. CSSLR does not conduct a tour annually. Silver Lake Modernism – Then and Now followed in the tradition of two previously sold-out events, the last of which was held in 2000. This year’s event showcased the work of vintage Modernist masters and a new generation of architects that have embraced the aesthetics of the Modernist movement. Some of these homes had never been available for viewing by the general public. Works by Gregory Ain, Ed Fickett, Harwell Hamilton Harris, Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, and Raphael Soriano, Rodney Walker, as well as works by contemporary architects, including Ana Henton and John Southern were featured. That evening from 5:00 until 7:30, was also the Gala Reception at John Lautner’s fabled Silvertop.
SLRC is an all-volunteer non-profit organization. Its house and garden tours in Silver Lake have been its only source of funding for its activities – such as sponsoring community meetings and distributing its newsletter to some 15,000 Silver Lake households. With the income from ticket sales to these events, we’ve been able to continue our work with the DWP and the community in order to build the new paths on West Silver Lake Drive and Armstrong Avenue.
As a result of our work with the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council, DWP, Mia Lehrer + Associates, the Bureau of Engineering, and the Silver Lake stakeholders, we’ll soon be breaking ground on an exciting new path project on Silver Lake Boulevard, and will be hosting meetings along with City Council Members Eric Garcetti and Tom LaBonge to survey opinions in the community on how the Meadow and Eucalyptus Grove areas can be opened for passive recreational use.
SLRC’s ability to effectively represent the community on reservoir issues has been generously supported by all who have purchased tickets to these fundraising events, as well as those who have acted as sponsors and volunteers.
