Shade Balls

On June 9, 2008, the DWP dropped roughly 400,000 black plastic “shade balls” into the Ivanhoe Reservoir.  Why?  Because when sunlight mixes with the bromide and chlorine in the reservoir’s water, the carcinogen bromate forms.  Therefore the idea was to block the sunlight with the floating balls.

It’s hard to think of Silver Lake Reservoirs without envisioning Silver Lake Meadow. Prior to 2011, however, that space was a nearly impenetrable tangle of dead trees and blackened stumps. This dark and mysterious wasteland was kept behind an 8
IVANHOE RESERVOIR UPDATE:

Currently the #IvanhoeReservoir is being refilled. The flow is being pumped slowly to adhere to regulations from the Department of Safety of Dams. The process to refill the reservoir will take about 4-5 months!
