RESOURCES

🌻 Native Plants are sold locally at Plant Material (Silver Lake, Glassell Park and Altadena stores), and Sunset Nursery.

🌸 The Theodore Payne Foundation, in Sunland, has a year-round nursery and an annual plant sale. They also offer classes, and annual garden tour, and have lots of information on their website.

☣️ Don’t Plant a Pest! Invasive plants crowd out and take resources from our locally native plants, and many also pose extra risks (toxic, more flammable, shallow roots cause erosion…). Click on the link above to find out which plants are Trouble, and also better options (native and adapted horticultural favorites).

🕊️ Plant for the Birds! The Audubon Society has gardening information for you!

🦋 Plant for Butterflies, too. Find the best native plants to help wildlife, and maybe Certify your garden with the National Wildlife Federation.

🌱 Plan your native garden with Calscape’s virtual Garden Guide here.

It’s hard to think of Silver Lake Reservoirs without envisioning Silver Lake Meadow. Prior to 2011, however, that space was a nearly impenetrable tangle of dead trees and blackened stumps. This dark and mysterious wasteland was kept behind an 8
